Happy National Service Dog Awareness Month From The Gresham Animal Hospital Team

Did you know that September is National Service Dog Awareness Month? It’s true! This awareness month was established in 2008 by Dick Van Patten – an actor and an animal advocate. Originally, Patten started this event as a fundraising event for guide dogs and service dogs. Today, what was once a fundraiser has become a month-long celebration. Once called National Guide Dog Awareness Month, this celebration has since expanded to recognize not only guide dogs but all service dogs.

Service Dogs Serve Important Purposes For People With Disabilities

The tasks a service dog can perform will vary depending on the needs of their person. Service dogs can be trained to do all of the following:

  • Retrieve objects

  • Help with balance

  • Give seizure alerts

  • Give diabetic alerts

  • Assist those with PTSD

  • and much more!

Service dogs are crucial to help those with certain disabilities to live lives that are safer and more comfortable. It is important to remember when seeing service dogs in public that, much like any person with a job, they are working. Their job is to stay alert and help their human. Don’t distract the dog by reaching to pet it or otherwise trying to get their attention.
