Gresham Animal Hospital_Small Pets in Tiny Places-Choosing The Best Habitats

The needs of small pets differ vastly from the needs of more common pets like cats and dogs. Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, ferrets, and rabbits have specific habitat needs that can either see your small pet living in luxury or struggling to have their daily needs met. Choosing the best home for your little pets starts with getting to know their needs. That said, here are a few tips to get you started on your mission for optimum small pet habitat status.

For pets such as guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, and rats, look for cages that provide enough room for the animal to comfortably explore without being cramped. Cages should be made of plastic, wire, or stainless steel. Wood-crafted habitats can be easily chewed through and should probably be avoided for the aforementioned small pets.

Additionally, make sure the cage has a smooth, solid bottom or conversely you could use a cage cover to ensure your little pals don’t injure their delicate feet on a wire cage floor.

Decorative accoutrements may seem like a splurge, but your small pets will adore a well-sized hamster wheel, a shelter to burrow into come bedtime, and various ramps and climbable objects to keep them engaged in exploring and conquering their domains.

Animals on the larger end of the small pets scale (ferrets, bunnies, minks) need a considerably greater amount of cage space and are often more inclined to roam their houses rather than spend their days in their cages.

Whatever habitat you may decide on, make sure you consult with both your Veterinarian at Gresham Animal Hospital as well as a retail specialist to ensure you meet all your small pet cage criteria. Learn more about our veterinary services for pets.
